While I haven’t had time to work out a new, catch-all General Store of my own with all this kid and Kickstarter business, I did lash together a stopgap solution for Volume 1 preorders. Both the softcover and the incredibly sweet limited edition hardcover, with its cloth binding and foil-stamped slipcover, can now be prepurchased in NTO’s Big Cartel store.
Another huge thanks to the Kickstarter backers that bankrolled printing the books!
A few readers have said they wish they could actually read the story the Author is working on in Genevieve. It’d be super fun to write the whole Genevieve series, but having that kind of time is a distant fantasy — not to mention I’m not sure I could maintain the melodramatic 19th century pulp style I imagine the Author writes in.
In addition to the little descriptive paragraph that appears in the last two pages of the comic, though, I did write two more extremely short passages. The first appears in the almost-legible shots of text in the comic’s first few pages:
“Stranger I may be, woman, but if you value your life, open this door!” But the villain’s voice remained jagged as rusting iron. Hearing the lock turn over, he chuckled at his own clever success — until the door opened and the long, slim, glinting blade of a silver cutlass was thrust through the aperture with Genevieve behind it. Narrowly it slid past him as he danced out of the way.
“You are devilish independent and no mistake!” exclaimed the vampyr. “Still with a wolf on your scent would you spurn my protection?”
“It is hard, choosing ‘twixt the bite of a wolf and a serpent.” She tossed her raven tresses defiantly, renewing her grip on the blade. “I am yet mulling it over.”
The second appears when the Author, already in ghoulish receipt of his three gifts, runs out of paper once again:
“In a nutshell,” said Genevieve, “Reilly, Donner and the Duchess are all members of a gang of illicit blooddrinkers! They prey on youths right here in Red Fork, shipping the poor unfortunate souls abroad in casks, disguised!”
“So it would appear,” harrumphed the Sheriff. “They may have been the very crooks we have been hunting even as we investigated the murder of Tawny O’Neil!”
“The Duchess has proven herself a liar, and she most likely lied about being in the hansome cab with Donnor when he was killed.”
“Yes. We’ve evidence to that effect, most assuredly.”
An idea dawned on Genevieve’s porcelain features. She then remarked, in an eager tone: “Wait for me here, Randall: I’m off to test a theory!”
You may have seen me tweeting about this but a fan reached out to me the other day to help get some extra attention for this Indigogo campaign to help this remarkable survivor of and crusader against human trafficking pay off a slew of medical bills. I figured the least I could do was donate a few of the upcoming NTO collections. So now, if you missed the Kickstarter and still want an early shot at a signed copy of Volume 1 & one of the KS reward prints you can get one by chipping in $25 to help Ravyn. Bam, you get the book before it’s for sale anywhere and get to feel proud of yourself for helping someone out. I think you should go for it.
I’m sorry to say there’s no new page this week. Next Town Over’s first missed update! That’s some kind of important milestone for a comic, isn’t it?
Sorry about the hiccup — two Tuesdays ago (the 18th) I went into labor with our son, who was born pretty smoothly the next morning. We were slated to be released from the hospital Friday, into the wake of that huge winter storm you saw on the news, but the little guy became dangerously jaundiced and needed phototherapy. We were ultimately let go Christmas Eve[ning] with a home phototherapy unit, but between the holiday and subsequent doctor visits and the basic business of exhaustion and confundity that accompanies new parenthood this week’s Genevieve page just didn’t get done.
While I was out, though….
The NTO Kickstarter went crazy, hitting its funding goal and its first stretch goal and with a week left on the clock. I cannot thank everyone who pledged enough, and if you haven’t yet may I suggest betting on a sure thing and snagging one of the clothbound, limited hardcovers?
The last two weeks have been surreal and overwhelming for me; I’m sorry about the missed update but I’m also feeling pretty justified and pretty confident you folks understand.
Regards,
Erin
Folks, a rather unassuming Kickstarter campaign has begun. If you can’t help out with a donation, I’d be much obliged if you could pass the word along.
I feel really strange and lazy putting up a KS campaign with no video given the degree to which the importance of KS videos has been touted but my video editing skills and setup are meh at best and while I realize that’s not the important bit, I’m severely strapped for time currently and just couldn’t wedge it in. Simultaneously I thought it was important to at least try to get the book moving forward at least financially while I’m mostly treading water for other reasons. Worst case scenario: we don’t make the funding goal and I try again later. We’ll get it done eventually, but hey, why not this time?
